What is Rose Pageant? Since 2000, VSA UCI has annually held the Rose Pageant during the Fall quarter. Ladies from Vietnamese Student Associations all over Southern California come together to celebrate all aspects of the Asian-American woman through dance, evening gown, questionnaires, and the Ao Dai segments. A fraction of the proceeds made from the event goes to a charity of our choice that gives back to the Vietnamese community. In addition, Rose Pageant holds performances from talents within the UCI campus and local community including Gio Nam Mua Lan (Southern Wind Lion Dance), Level 5 Modern Dance, Traditional Dance, and VSAUCI Choir.
Profits for the 2018 Rose Pageant will benefit the Children of Vietnam Organization, a humanitarian organization which helps poor and homeless children of the Da Nang area in Vietnam. Website: https://www.childrenofvietnam.org/
About: Rose Pageant, to me, means embracing your heritage while creating an everlasting sisterhood bond. I chose to direct it this year because I was really moved from previous rose pageant directors; their motifs, and wanted to continue their legacy that they have left behind. This year our philanthropy event is towards the Children of Vietnam, which helps serve the children in Vietnam who’s futures are affected by poverty, by educating minds, amending bodies, sheltering families and nurturing their development. Furthermore, I would like to present to you VSAUCI’s 18th Annual Rose Pageant’s theme “Con Rồng Cháu Tiên, Children of Dragon, Grandchildren of Gods.” My goal is to remind everyone that we are culturally from the same heritage and to acknowledge the power of community. Like the legend, I want to promote unity by emphasizing that everyone should love, honor, and protect one another, just as Lạc Long Quân and Âu Cơ have promised each other. Rose pageant is important because it exposes the Vietnamese culture by showcasing the tradition of the ao dai, while incorporating the modern style of the evening gown. The performances of traditional dance, lion dance, choir, and modern dance also demonstrate the Vietnamese culture with a modern twist. As well as the ladies who participate in the pageant, Rose Pageant creates an environment where ladies are able to develop self awareness while establishing a strong sense of community.
