What is Vietnamese Culture Night?

The Vietnamese Student Association’s Culture Night is a show, in the form of a theater play, which presents elements of Vietnamese culture. Incorporated in the play are other entertainment acts we feel best represent our culture. Culture Night has been tremendously valuable in achieving our goals by preserving yesterday’s traditions and incorporating a modern perspective of the evolving Vietnamese American culture with a unique one directed story-line and performances such as a fashion show, traditional and modern dances, skits, martial arts, vocal performances, and lion dance.

This year's show will benefit Pacific Links Foundation, our UNAVSA yearly philantrophy benefactor.

Synopsis

For all of Marcus's life, he has grown up following his father's wishes unable to pursue what he loves. However, in his 2nd year of college, an opportunity has struck and he is determined to make his own decisions. No longer will Marcus sit idly and let his father dismiss his passions. As tensions rise in the household, will Marcus need to fake his death to finally get what he wants?

VCN 2019 Director

Michael Mac

Director's message:

I was inspired by a friend of mine who really sold me the beauty of VCN. I kinda had an idea that has been on my mind for a while and went with it. It bugs me when people can’t aspire to be themselves. I saw a lot of students take on majors and classes they didn’t want because their family pushed them towards a certain career. Some of them couldn’t handle the rigor of the classes and had to switch their major secretly until graduation day. The ones that did switch had to face the reality of being shunned from their family. When the topic of VCN came up, I knew I had a chance to do something. I want to get a story out there, to get an honest conversation started, and, hopefully, to get a mutual understanding between traditional and modern ideals. Tracey and I started work on the script every week, and with the help of our editors, we came up with The Truth Untold. A lot of thought and work went into making this impactful. I want this night to be just as memorable as it is relatable. If I had to leave a message for anybody going through this right now: Don’t try to hide the truth. Embrace yourself.

That being said, I present to you: The Truth Untold.
